Clarity

Understanding a company's problem is key for you to fill their job opening.

Removing the buzzwords and cliches allow you to have a laser focus on how you can become helpful and essential for their operations.

The more clarity you have on their problems, the more clearly you can be seen as a solution.

Ask the following questions:

  • What is the biggest problem with the current project or role?
  • How long has the company been looking for the solution?
  • What has the company tried that has failed? Why did it not work out?
  • How much money is it costing the company? (Approx. time or money)
  • What does success look like? (Job description or goal of the project/task)

The more details you can get, the more you can tailor your own unique skills to handle their problem.

Remember this is all about using your own skills or superpowers to help a company.

There is no need to panic or worry that you need to oversell here.

Just actively listen to their problems and then show your skills to handle the job.

In the next section, we will discuss how you can show your unique skills apply to their problem.

Show That You Are Unique

Everyone has a wide background of work and life experience. It's your job to pick the very best so the brand understands a narrative of who you are and how you are a perfect fit.

For example, an actor might be very skilled at playing different types of roles, but how do they get the part they are pursuing? They either showcase their skills with a demo of the scene, or they rely on past examples to show that they are equipped for the new role.

Similarly to stand out in the job market you have to give a glimpse of why you are uniquely qualified for the role.

To stand out, try one of the following tactics:

  • Record a short video showing your problem-solving process
  • Have a portfolio of 2-3 projects that highlight your experience
  • Use transferable skills from another field and apply them to the current problem or scenario

You're already qualified for the job, but you have to show why you're perfect for the job. Make it easy for people to understand what makes you great.

Connect The Dots: Provide a Clear Outcome

Paint a picture of how you can help a company. A lot of times, the ones hiring don't have the technical background, and it is common for candidates to get too much into the weeds of how they can help without telling a story.

It is key to provide a story, a clear outcome, and an application of how the outcome can help the company reach its goal.

Your story and outcome will help you stand out from the competition. It will allow the recruiter and team clearly understand how you can help them.
